Negative taken of group standing on the steps of Budlong Hall at Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. Lydia Jane Durant (Nelson) is on bottom row second from right. Handwritten message on photograph reads "Lydia Jane Durant (Nelson) a student at Philander Smith College probably in College Preparation or normal ." Photograph stamped "Prater" in bottom left corner. Lydia Jane Durant Nelson married Duncan Wesley Nelson. In 1904, Duncan Wesley "Big Papa" Nelson organized McCabe Chapel located at North 13th and Pine Street in North Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas. Duncan Wesley Nelson's father was a slave who choose the last name Nelson from his owner's first name Nelson Smithson. Copied from the Duncan Wesley Nelson Family Reunion pamphlet from 1985.

Philander Smith College had its beginnings in Walden Seminary which was founded in 1877; in 1882 Mrs. Adeline Smith, widow of Mr. Philander Smith of Oak Park, Ill., designated $10,500 for Walden Seminary; trustees accepted the gift and gave it special recognition by changing the name of the struggling Walden Seminary to Philander Smith College; chartered as a four year college in 1883; first baccalaureate degree awarded in 1888.
